Queensland’s final smoke alarm deadline is 1 January 2027. 🔥
By this date, existing homes, townhouses and units must meet the updated smoke alarm requirements. This includes interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms, which means all alarms in the dwelling sound when one is activated.
For body corporate schemes, it’s important to understand where responsibility sits.
Smoke alarms within an individual lot will generally be the lot owner’s responsibility. Where a matter involves common property or shared building areas, the body corporate may also need to consider what action is required.
For committees, now is a good time to review any relevant scheme records, clarify responsibilities where needed and consider whether any common property works are required.
