Housing crisis ‘is fault of Aussies’

Home Affairs minister Tony Burke has been criticised for laying blame for the nation’s housing crisis at the door of Australians who want to live in big homes and not downsize.
Speaking at the National Press Club on Thursday, Mr Burke said Australians had “made a decision” to live with fewer people than in previous years and this was contributing to the housing crisis.
“Australians have every right to be able to decide how many people they want to have living per household, but that also means anyone who looks at the migration program and wants to somehow say it was their fault ... no,” he said.
“Australians have made a decision about how many people they want per household. Post Covid, after we’d all lived very closely to each other, a whole lot of people decided they wanted fewer people around than had previously been there, and that may continue as a trend.”
He pointed to the decline of the average number of people per household, which dropped from 2.9 people to 2.5 over three decades.
Opposition immigration spokesman Jonno Duniam said Australians should be entitled to live how they want without being lectured that their choices are the reason for the housing crisis.
Personal finance author Noel Whittaker said there were many reasons older Australians were not downsizing including “preparing the existing home for sale, agent’s commission, removal costs and then stamp duty, which can easily exceed $50,000 on the replacement property”.
“Then there is the potential impact on the age pension. The family home is exempt from the assets test, but money released by downsizing generally is not. It’s hardly surprising that many older Australians decide it’s easier to stay where they are.”
