More exciting developments are underway in Tanunda.

The proposed Tanunda Central Market development on Murray Street, right at the end of Julius Street, is set to bring boutique retail, fresh food outlets, cafés, restaurants and a bar to the heart of town as part of a $2.5 million investment. Plans include a pedestrian mall linking the precinct and additional parking.

For guests staying at Whiterocks, it’s another example of why Tanunda continues to evolve as one of South Australia’s premier regional destinations. Better yet, this new precinct will be only about an 8 minute stroll from Whiterocks.

Council and private investors continue to back the future of the Barossa, creating more reasons for visitors to stay longer and explore everything the region has to offer.

Great to see continued investment in visitor experiences and community facilities across the Barossa.

Construction is now underway on the new Barossa Creative Industries Centre in Tanunda, a major project that will expand the region’s cultural, arts and heritage offerings. The development will create a new cultural hub incorporating gallery, performance, education and community spaces in the heart of Tanunda, with completion expected in late 2026.

Best of all for our guests, this exciting new attraction will be just a 10-minute walk from Whiterocks, adding another reason to leave the car behind and explore Tanunda on foot.

Alongside the Barossa’s world-renowned food, wine and landscapes, investments like this help create even more reasons for visitors to stay longer and discover everything the region has to offer.

The Barossa continues to evolve while preserving the heritage, character and sense of place that make it one of Australia’s great regional destinations.

A good news story for Tanunda, the Barossa and everyone involved in regional tourism.

Congratulations to Tanunda on being named South Australia’s Top Tourism Town. This recognition reflects the hard work of local businesses, tourism operators, wineries, restaurants, accommodation providers, volunteers and the wider community who help make the Barossa such a special destination.

Awards like this are not won by one business or organisation. They are the result of many people consistently investing in quality experiences that encourage visitors to return and recommend the region to others.

As proud accommodation providers at Whiterocks Tanunda, we’re delighted to see Tanunda receive this well-deserved recognition.

Congratulations to all the finalists and winners, and especially to everyone who contributes to making Tanunda and the Barossa one of Australia’s premier regional destinations.

South Australia's spoilt for choice when it comes to great regional destinations.

Just around the corner from Whiterocks is the wonderful Apex Bakery, a traditional Barossa bakery with more than 100 years of history.

There’s something about the smell of fresh bread straight from a wood fired oven that instantly slows you down and makes you feel on holiday.

One of our favourite simple pleasures in Tanunda is an early morning walk to pick up a fresh loaf, still warm from the oven, then back to Whiterocks for coffee and a relaxed breakfast by the fire or out on the veranda depending on the season

Gather Round showed it again this year. The Barossa is not just a day trip, it is where people choose to stay.

Guests based themselves here, headed into the footy, then came back to a fire, a glass of Barossa red, and a proper place to unwind.

That is the experience.

If you are planning ahead for next year’s Gather Round, or simply looking for a Barossa escape any time, Whiterocks Tanunda is set up for exactly this. Walk to cafés, wineries and restaurants, or stay in and enjoy the space, the fireplace and the quiet.

Sleeps up to 8. Ideal for two couples or a small group.

A proper Barossa winter is on its way, and today the old ’54 Chev was put back to work doing what it was built for.

Collected a load of quality redgum and sugargum firewood mix from Matthew Reimann Firewood Supplies and the Chev didn’t even raise a sweat, in fact, the truck rides better with a decent load on, settles down nicely, and just feels right earning its keep again.

The hard part is already done. The timber is cut perfectly for the firebox. I handled stacking the wood pile, so everything is now ready to go for the season ahead.

Guests often tell us their favourite part of a Barossa stay is the quiet evening after a day out at the wineries, then back to Whiterocks fire lit, glass of Barossa red in hand, and nowhere else to be.

That is exactly what this is about.

If you are planning a winter escape, the firewood is stacked, the house is warm, and the pace slows down the moment you walk in.

And I’ll enjoy a cold Rehn Bier 1837 after stacking the wood.

The Greenock is a proper Barossa pub and one we’ve enjoyed for years.

There’s a bit of personal history here for us as well. My parents were involved in pubs in Eudunda, Angaston and later Adelaide, and knew the Schluter family, who owned The Greenock for over 100 years. That connection makes it even more special to drop in.

These days it’s in great hands, with the same strong sense of community, good honest food and consistency that keeps people coming back.

We still like to call in from time to time, occasionally in the old ’54 Chev, for a beer and a meal.

If you go, do yourself a favour and try the schnitzel.

It’s about a 15 minute drive from Whiterocks and an easy addition to your Barossa plans.
