Still getting frosts in Tumut — so keep the trimmer in the shed a bit longer.
Cutting a hedge now pushes out soft new growth, and soft new growth is exactly what the next frost burns. You end up further behind than if you'd left it alone.
Three things that matter right now:
🌿 Leave the frost-damaged foliage ON. It looks rough, but it's sheltering the healthy growth underneath. It comes off later.
🌿 Wait until the frosts have finished for the season before any real cut.
🌿 When you do cut, taper it — base wider than the top, so light reaches the bottom and it doesn't go bare down low.
The mistake we see most: one big hard cut, once a year. Little and often beats it every time — the hedge stays dense instead of going woody and hollow through the middle.
Rough timing: evergreens late spring into summer, deciduous while they're still dormant, flowering hedges straight after they finish flowering.
