What is Leadership?
Earlier this year, I read a book called 'Leadership Strategy and Tactics' by Jocko Willink.
I loved all of his other books, and was looking to start my own business so figured it would be a great place to start.
Whilst reading the book, I began to notice flaws within my current leadership team, their LACK of ownership and its effect on our team.
In his field manual, Jocko states “So how can a leader become great if they lack the natural characteristics necessary to lead? The answer is simple: a good leader builds a great team that counterbalances their weaknesses.”
After reading this book, and as I started to apply the principles and tactics, it became apparent to me that poor leadership isn’t because someone doesn’t know any better. It’s because their ego prevents them from seeing their weaknesses, it prevents them from owning their shortcomings and eventually, see’s them working good people into the ground or worse burning them out so badly that they end up leaving the business.
Businesses are like a navy seal team, they should run from the top down. If you collaborate and evolve with your team to achieve the mutual goal (best result for your clients) everyone wins. But when there isn't respect, value and most importantly COOPERATION, things start to fall apart.
With 2021 fast approaching and New Years resolutions only around the corner, wouldn’t you rather be the leader that your incredible team deserves? And if not, why are you willing to let your ego get in the way of yours and your businesses ultimate growth?
What sort of leader are you and why?
