Greenspot

Greenspot We work with communities, government and other key stakeholders to optimise economic and social outcomes in the transition to a circular, low carbon economy.

Greenspot was established in 2020 with the objective of acquiring and repurposing stranded property assets, primarily from the fossil fuel industry, to generate renewed economic activity. Our flagship project is the redevelopment of the Old Wallerawang Power Station, which we acquired from EnergyAustralia in September 2020.

Yesterday we lodged a Planning Proposal to rezone the site of the former Wallerawang Power Station, to lay a platform for an integrated precinct comprising commercial and industrial, residential, tourism and recreational uses.

Like many other regions around the world, the Lithgow region's economy has relied heavily on coal-based industry for decades and is facing significant structural challenges as the economy decarbonises.

We believe the Wallerawang Power Station is a strategic site which can catalyse Lithgow’s transition towards a resilient, prosperous and inclusive future. Please take some time to watch this short video which outlines our vision for the site.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people and organisations who have worked in close collaboration with us since 2020. We sincerely appreciate your insights and support.

We look forward to continuing to work with all of our project partners and stakeholders, and with members of the Lithgow community, as we continue to repurpose the site.

Greenspot is aware of the significant number of redfin perch that are being found dead in Lake Wallace. We have been in communication with representatives of both the NSW Environment Protection Authority and Lithgow City Council regarding the issue.

Under the terms of a registered lease with Greenspot, Council as tenant is responsible for the management of public recreational activities on and around Lake Wallace. We understand that Council has determined that recreational activities involving access to the water should cease for the time being.

Greenspot will continue to assess the situation, liaise with the relevant authorities and assist in the management of the issue wherever possible.

On this day 65 years ago the Premier of NSW, Joseph Cahill, officially opened the first section of the original Wallerawang Power Station.

In 1958 at the time of the opening, the station was generating around 60MW of baseload power and had already utilised 130,000 bags of cement, 6,200 tonnes of steel and 2,500,000 bricks for its construction. There were around 1,000 people employed on site in operational roles and for ongoing construction of the original station which ultimately had a generating capacity of 240 MW.

One of the chimney stacks from the original station still proudly stands today.

Further development of the station and its generation capacity occurred over the many decades since, producing shared economic and social benefit in the local community and beyond. At the time of the station’s closure in 2014, units 7 and 8 generated a combined 1,000MW of baseload power and made a very significant contribution to Australia’s energy needs.

Greenspot has a deep respect for the role that the Wallerawang Power Station played in the community and for the opportunities it provided for generations of local families. As we continue with our repurposing efforts, we believe that the legacy of the site can be honoured and that it can play a strategic role as a catalyst for the transformation of the local economy towards a resilient, prosperous, and inclusive future.

There was a lot of activity on site at Wallerawang last week with Red Team Training Solutions conducting explosives awareness training for the NSW Police Force Drug and Firearm Squad.

Red Team's owner, Andrew Coe, commented: "There can be significant hazards faced by police officers if they have to go into dangerous environments such as home-made bomb making laboratories. This type of training is about providing information, context and practical exercises to help improve individual and team safety."

This week Greenspot welcomed the NSW Police Force Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit to undertake simulated training exercises in and around the Old Wallerawang Power Station site. The Unit has been using the site as part of its extensive training program since 2015, with EnergyAustralia having hosted the training exercises prior to the transfer of the site to Greenspot in 2020. We have also hosted the Chemical Operations, Drug and Firearm Squad for various training exercises. It is a privilege for Greenspot to be able to assist the NSW Police and we thank them for the valuable work they do for communities across NSW.

Congratulations to Liberty Industrial for being shortlisted in the World Demolition Awards for the demolition of the Wallerawang Power Station. The Liberty team commenced the project in May 2021 and achieved completion in May this year. As steps are taken to decarbonise the economy and to enable a fair and equitable transition for workers in coal-based industry, Liberty's work at Wallerawang has helped to lay a strong platform for the repurposing of the site into a multi-use precinct and centre of economic growth in the Central-West of New South Wales. Wishing Liberty all the best for the awards!

This year the NSW Department of Education marks 175 years since the establishment of public schools in NSW.

There was a lot of community interest as the doors to the heritage listed original Wallerawang Public School were open to the public yesterday to acknowledge and celebrate 163 years of Public Education in Wallerawang.

The National Trust of Australia states that the Schoolhouse dates from the 1860s and ‘is reputed to be the oldest remaining building in the Wallerawang area’. It is described as ‘a rare surviving example of a small Gothic Revival style school’ and ‘a distinctive historic landmark, emblematic of the district, providing a reminder of its rural past’.

Principal of Wallerawang Public School Jenny Lamborn, who visited the site with community members yesterday, commented “it was wonderful to visit the 1st school today standing in grandeur. Many thanks to Greenspot and Emirates for accommodating my request, as community minded businesses. What a significant contribution from Mrs Walker to our community all those years ago by providing this building as a school room and teacher residence. All school sites represent the proud tradition of educating the students of our village. As we celebrate Education Week lets share our history as we work and walk together."
