🌟 Good News for Warwick – A Heritage Icon Nearing Completion! 🚂
In a world that often feels uncertain, it’s refreshing to share something truly positive happening right here in our Southern Downs community.
As supporters of the Southern Downs Steam Railway, we’re proud to announce another major milestone in the transformation of the historic Warwick Railway Station.
🏛️ A Building Steeped in History
Built in the 1880s, the Warwick Railway Station stands as one of Queensland’s most significant sandstone railway buildings. With its grand architecture, vaulted ceilings and commanding presence, it has welcomed travellers, troops, royalty and generations of locals for well over a century. It’s not just a station — it’s a living piece of our region’s story.
🛠️ Restored by Community – For Community
Over recent years, the dedicated volunteer team at the Southern Downs Steam Railway has invested countless hours restoring this iconic facility.
From structural works to beautifully finished interiors, upgraded amenities, lighting, and the activation of the precinct — the station has been brought back to life as a vibrant community and tourism hub.
🌿 The landscaping at the front of the station is now evolving, creating a welcoming entrance worthy of such a grand building.
🏗️ The Final Piece – The Awning Restoration
The last major hurdle has been the station awning… and now, the great news:
✅ Funding has been secured
✅ Works are about to commence
Over the coming weeks you’ll see:
• Full replacement of the awning roof cladding
• Renewal of box gutters
• Water blasting and repainting of all supporting stanchions
This is truly the “icing on the cake” — completing the external restoration and bringing the entire building back to its former glory ✨
🚀 What’s Next?
With the building now essentially restored, the focus shifts to activation and growth:
• Expanded events, weddings and functions in the Heritage and Junction Halls
• Increased heritage rail experiences through the Downs Explorer 🚂
• Greater use of the station platform as a unique event and tourism space
• Continued development of the precinct as a cultural, tourism and community hub
This project is more than restoration — it’s about creating opportunity, preserving history, and giving Warwick a landmark to be proud of for the next 100 years.
📅 Works on the awning are expected to commence within the next week, and we’ll keep you updated as progress unfolds.
👏 A huge thank you to our volunteers, supporters and funding partners, Queensland Rail (QR) — this simply wouldn’t happen without you.
👉 If you haven’t visited recently, come and see the transformation for yourself… it’s something special.
