🌟 Good News for Warwick – A Heritage Icon Nearing Completion! 🚂
In a world that often feels uncertain, it’s refreshing to share something truly positive happening right here in our Southern Downs community.

As supporters of the Southern Downs Steam Railway, we’re proud to announce another major milestone in the transformation of the historic Warwick Railway Station.

🏛️ A Building Steeped in History
Built in the 1880s, the Warwick Railway Station stands as one of Queensland’s most significant sandstone railway buildings. With its grand architecture, vaulted ceilings and commanding presence, it has welcomed travellers, troops, royalty and generations of locals for well over a century. It’s not just a station — it’s a living piece of our region’s story.

🛠️ Restored by Community – For Community
Over recent years, the dedicated volunteer team at the Southern Downs Steam Railway has invested countless hours restoring this iconic facility.
From structural works to beautifully finished interiors, upgraded amenities, lighting, and the activation of the precinct — the station has been brought back to life as a vibrant community and tourism hub.

🌿 The landscaping at the front of the station is now evolving, creating a welcoming entrance worthy of such a grand building.

🏗️ The Final Piece – The Awning Restoration
The last major hurdle has been the station awning… and now, the great news:
✅ Funding has been secured
✅ Works are about to commence

Over the coming weeks you’ll see:
• Full replacement of the awning roof cladding
• Renewal of box gutters
• Water blasting and repainting of all supporting stanchions

This is truly the “icing on the cake” — completing the external restoration and bringing the entire building back to its former glory ✨
🚀 What’s Next?
With the building now essentially restored, the focus shifts to activation and growth:
• Expanded events, weddings and functions in the Heritage and Junction Halls
• Increased heritage rail experiences through the Downs Explorer 🚂
• Greater use of the station platform as a unique event and tourism space
• Continued development of the precinct as a cultural, tourism and community hub

This project is more than restoration — it’s about creating opportunity, preserving history, and giving Warwick a landmark to be proud of for the next 100 years.

📅 Works on the awning are expected to commence within the next week, and we’ll keep you updated as progress unfolds.

👏 A huge thank you to our volunteers, supporters and funding partners, Queensland Rail (QR) — this simply wouldn’t happen without you.

👉 If you haven’t visited recently, come and see the transformation for yourself… it’s something special.

Meeting Notice: Warwick Railway Station’s New Cultural Chapter

An icon of Queensland’s railway history is preparing to write an inspired new chapter. The magnificent Warwick Railway Station, built in 1886 from locally quarried sandstone, is being unveiled as a Cultural Arts Centre for the Southern Darling Downs—a place where heritage, creativity and community come together.

To mark the beginning of this transformation, cultural arts groups and creative practitioners from across the region are invited to an exclusive information session on Thursday 12 February.

Refreshments will be served from 4.00pm and a look around, followed by a 4.30pm presentation, offering a first look at what promises to be one of regional Queensland’s most distinctive creative venues.

Lovingly restored and rich with character, Warwick Railway Station offers a rare blend of grandeur and flexibility. Artists and performers will have access to an array of spaces including the railway platform, gardens, verandahs, internal rooms for performances and talks, wall space for exhibitions, and open floor areas for visual displays. New amenities, refreshment facilities and generous free parking ensure the site is as practical as it is beautiful.

The station is managed by Southern Downs Steam Railway Association Inc, a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation with deep roots in heritage preservation and tourism. While SDSR remains custodian of the site, artists are invited to become curators of their own creative practice, operating on a collaborative, revenue-sharing model designed to be mutually rewarding.

More than a venue, this initiative is about building a destination—one that draws tourists, locals and visiting arts groups alike through originality, diversity and shared promotion. Set against the timeless beauty of sandstone arches and railway lines, Warwick Railway Station is poised to become a living gallery, performance space and cultural meeting point.

Information Session: 4.00pm Thursday 12 February
Location: Warwick Railway Station, 1 Brosnan Crescent, Warwick

A Unique Heritage Venue Just One Hour South of Toowoomba

For couples, organisations and community groups across Toowoomba and the wider Darling Downs, a truly distinctive wedding or event venue is closer than many realise. Just one hour south, in the heart of the Southern Downs, lies the beautifully restored Warwick Railway Station, venue that offers character, history and experience that modern function centres simply cannot match.

Built from locally quarried sandstone and rich with architectural detail, the 1886 built Warwick Railway Station provides an elegant, story-filled setting ideal for weddings, engagement parties, conferences, product launches, presentations and private celebrations. Vaulted interiors, original features and landscaped surrounds create a warm atmosphere that feels special from the moment guests arrive.

What truly sets this venue apart for Toowoomba-based hosts is the opportunity to incorporate a heritage train into the event. With modern amenities, flexible spaces, free on-site parking and the ability to tailor catering, theming and entertainment, Warwick Railway Station is perfectly placed to serve Toowoomba and regional communities seeking something genuinely different.
For those wanting to step outside the ordinary while staying close to home, Warwick Railway Station offers a unique heritage experience well worth the short journey south.
