The Willowend Round House

The Willowend Round House Australia's first approved super adobe round house! We built Australia's first council approved superadobe earth bag round house in West Gippsland, Victoria.

We used a combination of earth bag and rammed earth. The home was designed by Peter Negus (owner/builder) and took us three years to owner build, it was completed in August 2019. The home stays incredibly cool in the hot summer months without any cooling as earth bag is 100% thermal mass. We used a natural clay/sand/lime mixture to render the outside. The home is also 100% off grid and is powered by solar & batteries. Superadobe earth bag is an incredibly simple, strong way of building homes and assorted structures. It was pioneered by Nadir Khalili, an Iranian born architect, who moved his studies out into the Californian high desert in the early 90's to find a better, stronger, cheaper way of building, to be able to house all the people of the world. What he devised was an ingenious method of utilising rolls of polypropylene bags filled with stabilised earth and supported with barbed wire, to create some of the strongest structures available today.
