Homelessness has been tapping me on the shoulder for a long time — especially among the men and women who spent their lives serving the rest of us.

On any given night in this country, tens of thousands of veterans are without stable housing. And many more are hidden in plain sight — sleeping in cars, rotating couches, surviving without the one thing that allows a human being to think clearly: safety.

I’ve seen that reality up close. Strong, capable people trained to endure anything — except instability without purpose.

Operation Merit begins here. Not with charity. With dignity.

A secure home is not a reward. It is a foundation. Stability allows breathing. Breathing allows thinking. Thinking allows rebuilding.

This isn’t about rescue. It’s about restoring footing.

If you served and you’re struggling, you matter. You are not forgotten.

Homelessness has been tapping me on the shoulder, especially among the people who spent their lives serving the rest of us. On any given night in the U.S., over 30,000 veterans are experiencing homelessness, and that number doesn’t include the many more who are “hidden homeless” — couch surfing, living in cars, or staying temporarily with others because they don’t have a stable place of their own.

I’ve seen that hidden reality over and over — good people, trained to serve and endure, trying to survive without safety or stability.

Operation Merit starts here: with homelessness, and with a commitment to stability for those who served us. Not charity — but dignity. A place that’s secure enough to breathe, heal, work, and rebuild.

If you served others and you’re struggling, you matter. You are not forgotten.
