A severe weather warning has been issued for the Illawarra region.

A thunderstorm is predicted to hit western parts of the Illawarra from this afternoon, brining damaging winds and heavy rain and continuing through to tomorrow morning.

People are being urged to stay out of the water and avoid walking near surf exposed areas.

Please see below advice from the SES:

👉 Move vehicles under cover or away from trees

👉 Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony

👉 Keep at least eight meters away from fallen power lines or objects that be energised, such as fences

👉 Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall

A health alert has been issued as air quality declines in the Illawarra region due to smoke from fire hazard reductions.
Please be aware that people with heart or lung conditions including asthma, please aged 65 years or older, infants and children and pregnant women are being strongly urged to take precautions due to the poor air quality as a result from the current hazard reductions.

These precautions include:
• Reduce outdoor physical activity if you begin to develop symptoms such as a cough or shortness of breath
• Consider closing windows and doors until the outdoor air quality is better
• Follow the treatment plan recommended by your doctor.
• If you’re concerned about symptoms call the 24-hour HealthDirect helpline on 1800 022 222 or see your doctor
• In a health emergency, call triple-0 for an ambulance.
