IM GUT LES HIBOUX COOPERATIVE COHOUSING BY PETER MÄRKLI Zürich. “Im Gut’s historical references are rich and numerous-found not least in the classical-modern Italianate colonnades running the full length of the blocks. This is not just practical but also cerebral, idiosyncratic architecture”.

AVECINATE BY RAFAELA SALAS & BERTA VILAR Barcelona. The proposal focuses on the transformation of very specific & strategic points which are the interiors of the building blocks but the intention is to be able to transform the whole neighborhood. The changes will impact its main configuration, the traditions and habits and routines in order to generate a new way of experiencing and living it. BY AND

AVECINATE BY RAFAELA SALAS & BERTA VILAR Barcelona. Two new constructions activate the new interior public space of the existing building blocks. On the one hand, a multifunctional center that will host educational and cultural activities for different collectives. On the other hand, a small study and reading space in relationship with the neighborhood’s scale

AVECINATE BY RAFAELA SALAS AND BERTA VILAR Barcelona. The whole design comes from a pragmatic analysis. This means that it is based on the needs, ambitions, wishes and experiences of the inhabitants and direct users pf the neighborhood. “This is what humanizes our project and makes us face it from another point of view. We were looking for a proposal that could satisfy the needs of the elderly but also the kids’ and teenagers’ ones through a cultural and educational proposal that doesn’t exist now. We then empty the central space of the building blocks to give it to the public space.” BY AND

R50 COHOUSING Berlin. Underneath there is a doubleheight, flexible community space which connects the building’s main access with the public street space. It is made available for neighborhood groups and other public uses. The modular timber façade with fixed and flexible, outward opening glazed door elements was specifically developed for this building. This combined with the all-around balconies on each level allows a direct dialogue between the building’s architecture and its use.

KYODO NO MORI BY UARCHITECTS Tokyo. The consultation process was instigated by project developer and indenting resident, Tetsuro Kai. It involved four levels of negotiation:
1. Meetings between the architect and each household to discuss their personal requirements.
2. Meetings of the developer, architect and other consultants to discuss building technology.
3. Meetings of a steering committee comprising the developer and three households randomly rotated according to availability.
4. Meetings of the whole community.

KYODO NO MORI BY UARCHITECTS Tokyo. The uniqueness of this project compared to past cooperative projects is the way in which collaboration was used as a tool in achieving integrated community living within the urban biotope. The participatory design process was fully comprehensive. This is specially remarkable since the project was the first cohousing development in Japan. Residents had no prior knowledge of cohousing. They came together with the design and development of the project, not to build community, as is generally the case in cohousing. And yet, a community was built in the process.
