Dat Netanyahu voor de confrontatie blijft kiezen, heeft alles te maken met zijn eigen politieke overlevingsstrijd. Hij is al meermaals afgeschreven, maar kwam telkens terug en stijgt ook nu weer in de polls. Een peiling die vorige vrijdag in de krant ‘Maariv’ verscheen, dicht Nationale Eenheid (de partij van zijn belangrijkste rivaal Benny Gantz) nog maar 20 zetels toe. Dat is minder dan de helft van wat ze kort na de Hamas-terreur kreeg voorspeld. Maar Netanyahu’s coalitie behaalt nog geen meerderheid, een reden om de voor hem lonende oorlog te rekken.
