GABORONE – Thousands of public servants can finally breathe a sigh of relief after government announced the lifting of the temporary suspension of new applications under the Government Employees Motor Vehicle and Residential Property Advance Scheme (GEMVAS).
The Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) has confirmed that new applications for GEMVAS loans will resume effective June 15, 2026.
The scheme was suspended in March after the agreement between government and participating banks expired, leaving many civil servants unable to apply for vehicle and housing loans.
At the time, DPSM said negotiations to renew the agreement were at an advanced stage and appealed for patience from affected employees.
The latest development signals the end of a three-month wait for public officers who had put plans to buy vehicles or residential properties on hold.
GEMVAS is one of the most popular government-backed schemes among civil servants, providing access to financing for motor vehicles and residential properties through participating financial institutions.
The resumption of new applications is expected to be welcomed by public service employees who had been eagerly awaiting the conclusion of talks between government and the banks.
DPSM has advised eligible officers wishing to access the scheme to submit their applications from June 15 onwards through the approved channels.
The lifting of the suspension follows the successful conclusion of negotiations between government and participating banks, paving the way for the scheme to resume normal operations.
