Carmelita Gardens, Belize Carmelita Gardens offers the best of both worlds. A community where people make their home amid nature, while employing the latest green technology.

The experience of planning and developing a new community is similar to planting a garden. It requires patience, hard work and a vision - but what a joy when you see the plants break through the soil. Carmelita Gardens, located in Santa Familia Village, Cayo, is now breaking through and is quickly becoming the freshest community in Belize. When I began planning Carmelita Gardens, I researched a planning movement called "New-Ruralism", which "is a framework for creating a bridge between Sustainable Agriculture and New Urbanism". Since then, the most esteemed land planners and architects have been promoting a similar idea called Agrarian Urbanism. The principles of Agrarian Urbanism are resonating with people looking for an alternative to the rat race. The ability to independently generate electricity from the sun and produce a sustainable amount of food from a garden at affordable prices is finally here. For years the intrepid few have lived off-the-grid in remote locations, but now it can be a mainstream reality. Carmelita Gardens is designed to combine new technologies, traditional gardening and classical design into a cohesive community of independent homes. This new “Artisan Agrarianism” represents a blend of resilient living, self-sustainability and a community atmosphere. I like to think of Carmelita Gardens as a place where people can be "Independent Together". The weather in Belize is great and has just the right mix of sunny days and rainy days. The clear skies have afforded us the opportunity to move quickly in building homes and establishing a community. The rainy days are a blessing as it makes all the plants so vibrant, it fills the cisterns and makes the sounds of the river so inviting. Every day brings new excitement, new development and life changing experiences. We like to say; when the sun is shining and the rain is falling we can almost watch the corn grow. Well, you can actually watch the Carmelita Gardens community grow with every new roof top. As new residents move in and embrace their new lifestyle it reminds us of one of our favorite quotes, “If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we are not really living.” ~Gail Sheehy. Come grow with us. Please join us for a tour or just start a conversation about what your new home and life could be. Sometimes the best moments here aren’t planned.
Just a quiet walk with a dog… and a few photos along the way 🌿

Across our 98 acres, the landscape gently shifts from shaded wooded paths to open green spaces, with beautiful homes, each with its own character, thoughtfully set into the surroundings.

This is everyday life at Carmelita Gardens, peaceful, spacious, and easy.

La Ruta Maya passed Carmelita Gardens early this morning 🚣‍♂️

The first canoe reached us only about 16 minutes after leaving San Ignacio — such incredible speed. These teams are working really hard to compete.

Neighbors and visitors gathered along the banks to cheer them on. It was a beautiful morning by the river.

La Ruta Maya (“The Maya Route”) is Belize’s most famous canoe race, first held in 1998. Teams paddle nearly 180 miles over four days, following the historic Maya trading route along Belize’s rivers from San Ignacio to Belize City.

As our community grows, our gardening experience grows with it. 🌱

Harry and Jackie carefully select the best varieties of vegetables and herbs that truly thrive in our tropical environment. It takes years of trial, learning, and patience — but it’s wonderful to see how their time and dedication are paying off.

What we’re building here is not just a garden. It’s knowledge, resilience, and abundance.

While the world rushes…
we paddle.

Blue skies. Clear river. No traffic. No alarms. No chaos.

Just you, a canoe, and the Belize River flowing past ancient jungle. 😌

In Belize, many dogs and cats live outdoors and never receive basic veterinary care.
Without help, the cycle continues — more puppies, more suffering.

That’s why it’s great to see initiatives like this — offering affordable spay & neuter clinics and basic medical care, helping improve the lives of animals in the country.

It’s also encouraging to see more responsible pet owners in Belize 🤍🐾

First day of clinic update 🐶🐱

Our first day was a bit crowded and quite long — which was expected — and drum roll, please 🥁

94 dogs and 16 cats were spayed and neutered on Sunday!!!

What an incredible achievement!

A huge thank you to the amazing FAVI team, Dr. Tesecum, and the PAWS clinic team for making this possible. We are so grateful for your hard work and dedication.

Another massive thank you to the responsible and veeeeeryyyy passionate pet owners who brought their animals and stayed with us throughout the day — and to our absolutely incredible volunteers. You guys ROCK! 💪💚

Another groundbreaking at Carmelita Gardens. A new beginning on a beautiful riverside lot.

Our community continues to grow as more people find a place that feels like home and begin a new chapter of life here in Belize.

Golden Shovel gatherings are always special. A time to welcome new neighbors, share experiences, and build real connections within the community.

✨ Congratulations to Johan and Tilla on this exciting new beginning. Together, we are building more than homes. We are building community.

A beautiful new home now stands in Carmelita Gardens, now carrying a story of Belize within its walls.
This spiral staircase is wrapped in a hand-painted mural by a local artist, blending hardwood, stone, jungle and ancient architecture into one flowing piece.
Art and craftsmanship, this is the soul of community living in Belize.

🌕 Full moon over Carmelita Gardens

The last full moon of the year brought a peaceful glow over Carmelita Gardens — quiet roads, warm lights in the homes, and palm trees shining in silver moonlight. Simple, calm, and beautifully off-grid.

Life here slows down.
The stars feel closer.
And community feels real.

Big morning at Carmelita Gardens! 🌿✨
Our Forest Garden team was busy planting coffee trees — grown the permaculture way, tucked into the shade of banana palms and surrounded by biodiversity.

This is how nature likes to work: slow, balanced, and full of life.

One day… we dream of opening a little coffee shop right here — serving fresh-brewed cups from beans grown in our own soil. ☕💚

It may take a little time, but good things usually do.
