CARP
IT’S ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY!
Welcome to our Summer Newsletter…and....Change is in the air!
Change…to transmute, transform, vary, mutate, amend, modify.
We have just completed our busiest quarter in six years and have had the opportunity to talk to thousands of community members on what your Chapter is doing and what is on your mind. Your Board of Directors are entering a reflective mode for the summer and exploring our impact on key initiatives. All around us, and important to all of us, are the changes we have been focusing on:
At the Provincial level, healthcare transformation has begun around the strategy of “Patients First” and a new, emerging opportunity around “patient advisors and patient advisory committees” is presenting itself to our community.
At the Central East Local Health Integration (CE LHIN) Network and Durham Region level, there is a significant focus on dementia education and support services to the community.
At the Durham Region level, there is a significant effort around “Age Friendly Communities” that is well underway with the opportunity for our community to engage in focus groups and a conference to provide input to the effort.
At the very local level, the Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) is being dissolved and each campus is moving to a new corporation…Centenary campus to the Scarborough Hospital and the Ajax-Pickering campus to Oshawa Lakeridge.
At the CARP National office, the staff and executives have been replaced and the new team, under Wanda Morris, is examining the role of the chapters and the priorities to focus on around “A New Vision of Aging”
We do continue to have some social events and the experience with the Ambassador from Panama was a great example of something different!

In this newsletter, you will find links to most of these upcoming changes and we are arranging events to solicit your input on many of these changes. We know that many of you who act as advocates will be interested in our direction and that most of you will at least be informed of what is happening through our newsletter. We hope to see many of you on August 24 to help us build the calendar for 2016 and 2017.
Enjoy the summer!

CARP – A New Vision of Aging: a Dialogue with Your Local Board
CARP is a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization committed to advocating for a New Vision of Aging for Canada and promoting social change that will bring financial security, equitable access to health care and freedom from age discrimination.
Please join us on Wednesday evening to have an update and dialogue with our Board of Directors focused on local advocacy updates:
What is happening with the RVHS? What are the current plans for the Ajax-Pickering Campus?
What is the new health system evolving to under the “Patients First” provincial strategy and what impact will this have on our Durham health providers?
What is an “Age Friendly Community” and what is the Region of Durham doing to get community feedback?
What is happening with the “end of life” consultations and are there investments being made?
Does Durham have a strategy to educate and support dementia patients and their families?
Our objective is to have an open dialogue on these topics but, most importantly, is to hear from you as to what we need to focus on for 2016 and 2017.
This is a terrific opportunity for our community to provide local feedback on what is important to us as your Board of Directors make the rounds with all levels of politicians and strongly represents the voice of Durham Regions' CARP members.
