Hi homeowners!

In case you didn't know, the city of Hamilton has implemented a Vacant unit tax in order to help with the homeless problems in our area. Home owners should fill out the declaration form on the City of Hamilton website under "Vacant unit tax". When you acknowledge to the city that this is your principal residence, they will not add the extra tax on your bill. Failure to do so will result in the City of Hamilton billing you 1% of its value as an additional tax. It only takes 15 minutes to do, you will need your tax notice from the city in order to complete it. It must be done prior to April 30. Also, the city will only start reviewing refunds for residents who neglected to file in July -- if you miss the deadline, you will need to file to get it back.
