Vermiculite Insulation: What Every Homeowner Should Know

During a recent home inspection, I found vermiculite insulation in the attic. If your home has vermiculite, be aware that its insulating value (R-value) is generally considered unreliable, and some older vermiculite may contain asbestos.

If vermiculite is present, avoid disturbing it and have it assessed by a qualified environmental contractor. If removal is recommended, it should be completed safely by a licensed environmental remediation company.

I've been in the construction trade for almost 39 yrs. I've done hvac systems since I was sixteen. I've installed furnaces in old and new homes . Worked and still working with every person in the trade. From footings to every aspect of a home being built to finish. I've built 3 houses with and for family. One of the reasons I got into home inspections is that my kids are all at the age where there starting to get into buying there own homes and family friends ask me for assistance. And I want to see people that are buying homes get the right information they need and feel secure about buying there home.
