The appearance of the ocean’s apex predator in Bamfield Inlet yesterday capped off an amazing week with a multi-generation family stay at Pacific Sounds Lodge. These Bigg’s Killer Whales have been frequenting Bamfield regularly this year presumably looking for harbour seals at the heads of Bamfield Inlet and Grappler Inlet.

Guests at Pacific Sounds Lodge were treated to an incredible few days of biology immersion with extraordinary naturalist Ian Cruickshank for our first ever Wings of Spring signature retreat. Breeding songbirds in the rainforest belted out melodic ‘Pacific Sounds’, enhanced by Ian’s parabolic microphone.

During Ian’s stay he guided guests through identifying and learning about 55 species of birds (https://ebird.org/tripreport/533964) found on the lodge property or nearby waters and 138 plant species on the lodge grounds uploaded to . We also explored our new ‘Fungal Foray’ trail.

On his way out of Bamfield, Ian identified a Northern Parula, only the 29th record in BC. https://bcbirdalert.blogspot.com/2026/06/rba-northern-parula-in-bamfield-june-5th.html

Last week, we had the privilege of welcoming musician Olive Klug to Pacific Sounds Lodge. Their incredible talent brought people together for a truly special evening shared with our guests and the Bamfield community. Moments like these remind us how powerful music and connection can be.

It’s herring spawning season throughout the BC coast. In late February, herring spawned in the bay in front of Pacific Sounds Lodge for the first time in 50 years. Whales and sea lions were observed gorging themselves. We can’t think of a better way to welcome spring.

The convoluted geology of Barkley Sound is a paddler’s paradise that set the backdrop for our first ever kayak retreat. Amazing guests, expert guiding, extraordinary cuisine, live music and abundant wildlife made it a trip to remember.

August on the outer coast marks a subtle shift. 
 
Summer always seems to pass too quickly, but we’re not done yet. There’s still plenty of time to welcome guests to this remarkable part of the coast through the rest of the summer and into fall, when the rainforest takes on deeper hues and the rhythms of the season begin to change.

There’s still so much to experience, and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Here on the edge of the continent, Earth Day sounds like waves breaking on the shore, the wind moving through Sitka spruce, and the cry of a bald eagle circling high above the inlet.

At Pacific Sounds Lodge, every day is a reminder of our place within this coastal ecosystem—where the rhythms of tides, seasons, and songs shape how we live, learn, and gather.

Today, we pause to reflect on what it means to belong to a place. To care for it. To listen closely. And to act with intention so that future generations can walk these same beaches, hear these same sounds, and feel the same sense of wonder.
