Completed in 1911 and designed by architects John Merven CarrĆØre and Thomas Hastings, the building is a classic example of Beaux-Arts architecture, a style known for its symmetry, grandeur, and inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman design. When it opened in 1911, the library was the largest marble structure ever built in the United States and represented the idea that public knowledge should be housed in spaces as grand as government or religious institutions.
The iconic white marble building along Fifth Avenue is guarded by two famous lion statues, Patience and Fortitude, which have become symbols of strength and resilience in New York City.
Inside, the stunning Rose Main Reading Room stretches nearly two city blocks and features soaring ceilings, chandeliers, and painted sky murals, creating a space that feels more like a grand hall than a traditional library.
