Now that it’s officially fall and summer is slipping away … seems like a good time to ask…how was your summer?

Ours was busy in the best way. Most days, the dock was empty except for turnover days, with boats coming and going and people heading off for their week on the water. It felt really good to see so many folks out there enjoying it.

We met lots of lovely new guests, enjoyed catching up with our regulars, and even managed to sneak in a few properly relaxing days on our own boat.

One good thing from our summer? Honestly, probably that. Getting a little time on the water ourselves and remembering why we love it out here in the first place.

We’ve still got some fall boating ahead of us, but before summer disappears completely…

John & I want to thank everyone who reached out, shared a memory, or sent us a message about Herbie. We’ve read every one, and they’ve meant more to us than we can say. ❤️

It’s been lovely hearing how many people had their own little connection with him. He had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world.

And he had the most expressive face, which was quite an accomplishment for a guy with no eyebrows. 😆

We miss him terribly, but hearing your stories and knowing how much happiness he shared with so many of you has been a wonderful gift.

It was a rough weekend, no question. This past Friday we had to say goodbye to our dearest, most empathetic, most happiest of dogs, Herbie. He truly was the best dog.

After Frank’s passing, he had big paws to fill, but fill them he did with his court jester like antics, his endless empathy and his commitment to introduce himself to anyone who walked by, but was also respectful of those who might not be interested.

Herb was the best H2O Getaways customer greeter and every lock we visited his arrival was always punctuated with an enthusiastic “HERB!” He was always a burst of joy and we loved that he was willing to follow us on every adventure we chose. It was always more fun with Herb around. Our hearts are broken. He’s left a giant, 115lb void in our lives.

“The lock staff are SO nice.” It’s true! They are!
Very Canadian of them. 🇨🇦

They’re friendly, patient, helpful, happy to answer questions and, more often than not, they go out of their way to make folks feel comfortable if they’re a bit nervous or unsure. 💕And we’re incredibly grateful for that.

Once our guests head off on their own, knowing there are these lovely humans at every lock, ready with a smile, a bit of advice or an extra hand when it’s needed? That means a lot to us!

And judging by what we hear when our guests get back, it means a lot to them too. 😎 .

So, to all the Trent-Severn lock staff who help us out in so many ways all summer long - THANK YOU! ❤️
