The violence that took place against our Jewish community has us all reeling.

Many of us know, or know someone who knows either the perpetrator or the injured police officer.

Or both. This town is that small.

Let that sink in.

We all need to stand up for each other. Violence and acts of hatred against any group of people can't be tolerated - Jewish, Muslim, Christian, your grandma's knitting circle - none of them.

And not because we're protecting our city's tag line.

It's encouraging to see support for Officer Smith and his family and our Jewish community pour in.

My prayer is that as the shock fades, the kindness won't.

Do justice. Love kindness. Walk humbly.

Always.

I'm thankful for a Saturday re-set.

Our team just got two people smaller. Emily and Gabriel have moved to a new brokerage, and I'm actually very proud of them.

When we started this team, the kids and I had a conversation.

"We're either going to do this really well together, as a family, or we're going to do it really well, separately, as a family".

Business is business, but Christmas dinners and face time with the grandbabies will not be compromised.

So nothing here is broken.

Watching your own kids build something that's theirs, not an extension of yours, is a strange kind of parenting.

There's no bitterness here. Just a lot of love and a little bit of "go get it."

Which leaves me with my own reset to think about.

Fall always feels like the real start of the year in this business anyway, way more honest than January.

Fewer people on the team right now means more room for me to figure out what I actually want the next chapter to look like:

Who I coach, who I list for, what I build.

👠 I confess I'm really not any kinda chic.

I mean, mortgages. Really Bouma??

But I kinda love watching mine disappear. Even more than I love fancy coffee or Amazon Prime days.

So if I can find a great handbag at a consignment store or make designer coffee at home, I'll do it for the sake of my mortgage.

It never completely goes away.

But the less mortgage there is, the more equity we have to leverage.

Our un-chic choices have helped us build our dream home.

I'm hiring, and this post might talk half of you out of applying.

But that's ok.

I'm looking for my EA / Ops Manager for our small real estate team. The other half of my brain. The polka dots to my stripes.

Runs my calendar, keeps our numbers straight, handles client care, doesn't need me to explain the same thing twice, and comes correct.

Accurate data, speedy correspondence, great spelling and grammar. (It's important.)

Also important:

You keep things confidential. Client financials, commission numbers, my own chaos: none of it leaves this office.

You take initiative. Ask great questions and fill in the blanks instead of waiting on me.

You already use AI tools to work faster (ChatGPT, Claude, whatever). I'm trying to figure it all out but it would be cool if you're better at AI than I am.

Like, way better at it. And you can remind me regularly what the differences are between skills, projects, workflows and artifacts.

You can plan and schedule content that doesn't put people to sleep.

You stay calm when a deal is on fire an hour before closing.
