With families spending more time at beaches, pools and lakes this summer, the Trauma Team at Peterborough Regional Health Centre is reminding parents that something as simple as the colour of a child's swimsuit could help save a life.
According to the Trauma Team, children wearing bright, vibrant swimwear are much easier to see in crowded swimming areas and underwater if an emergency occurs.
Choosing highly visible colours can help parents, lifeguards and first responders locate a child more quickly, where every second counts.
The reminder comes as water safety remains a priority during the busy summer season. PRHC is encouraging parents to consider swimsuit colour when shopping for swimwear and to make bright, high-visibility colours part of their family's water safety plan.
Health officials also remind families that brightly coloured swimsuits should be used alongside other important safety measures, including constant adult supervision, wearing properly fitted life jackets when appropriate and staying within designated swimming areas.
As more people head to the water this summer, PRHC says taking a few simple precautions can help prevent tragedies and keep everyone safer.
