The Cape on Bowen Community

The Cape on Bowen Community So Close, Yet a World Away You will experience daily sightings of eagles, orcas, seals, otters, sea lions and deer, among other diverse wildlife.

Just 20 minutes of a ferry ride from Vancouver Mainland, The Cape on Bowen encompasses 618 acres and represents the entire southwest tip of Bowen Island. Here lies a limited number of 10-acre nature estates, within an idyllic, tight-knit island of friendly, caring neighbours who form a truly intimate human connection based on shared lifestyle, passions and values. Living here, you'll be immersed i

n exceptional quietude and tranquillity - at one with nature, inspired, nourished, anchored and empowered by it every day. Imagine the sense of comfort in "arriving home" to the lush forest and the utter magic of witnessing the activity and listening to the magnificent calls of animals. The southwest-facing exposure of The Cape features exceptional sunshine and is warmer than the rest of the island by an average of 3 degrees Celsius. The development provides an extensive network of trails leading all throughout this unforgettable coastal property, connecting iconic landmark viewpoints, beaches, and vast, lush forest. There is simply nothing else like it! Along the western waterfront is a 1-km sunset trail that connects the Cape Roger Curtis Lighthouse park, Roger Curtis pebble beach, and what the island knows to be "Proposal Point"โ€”a romantic viewpoint where couples get engaged. In between, there is a spectacular cantilevered walkway overhanging a coastal bluff. On the southern shore within this development is a 32-acre managed Nature Reserve that welcomes the public. To live at the Cape is an absolute privilege. Here is a precious ecological system, rare and diverse. This is a role model development that honours natural heritage. And here, we invite and welcome a community of conscious residents who cherish Mother Earth, and would be proud, proactive stewards of this unique area that is part of the Howe Sound Biosphere. Please join us to further our foundation and build on our mission to set sustainability precedents. We envision a community where the collective treads lightly on the land and its natural resources, where built structures are exemplary in green building systems and technologies, and where horticultural and agricultural practices are regenerative and organic. Groundwater wells are in place and septic is pre-approved. 45,000 sqft of total buildable area is permitted through a primary residence and secondary structures that could accommodate farm stables, detached cottages and home-based business, workshops, studios.

With joy, gratitude, humility and a tremendous sense of fulfillment, I announce that as of yesterday, May 9, 2023, 242 acres of the Cape lands have been transferred from private ownership into the public domain. We honor our place within the UNESCO Biosphere Region of Howe Sound, and look forward to a park that also honors the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

A 19-year saga has finally come to completion, and this sacred land is now going to be forever conserved. Future generations will be able to come for deep connection to nature, and educational stewardship and restoration programs.

Since 2004, the owners held the intention of creating public access to as much of the Cape as possible. It had never been in their mindset or realm of imagination that it could be achieved without development.

Our world has evolved through the years. Many forces converged and aligned to make this happen for the greater good of the land, the animals, the plants, the humans and all our future generations.

This historic conversion of serviced private land into a publicly accessible conservation park is a true paradigm shift. With faith and hope, I seed the intention for this private-to-public conversion to inspire other holders of ecologically significant land.

In my conversations with Metro Vancouver staff through the months, I am encouraged by their initative to explore the possibility of extending protection from deforestation beyond the Cape into crown land, and to work towards the establishment of the Cape's coastline as a marine reserve.

With gratitude,
Candy Ho
Chief Executive Officer

๐ŸŒŽ Happy Earth Day! ๐ŸŒŽ

What a wonderful way to celebrate and honor Earth day. The Cape is a gift to humanity. The flora, the fauna - the terrestrial and marine wildlife. The spirit of the land - its stewards and guardians.

This is truly a magical, sacred place. I look forward to our future generations being inspired here to protect and cherish Gaia. Children will be educated here. They will not come only to enjoy and receive. They will also share their energy of love, joy, purity, sweetness, light, and wonder. They will tend her, learn how to be good stewards, and many will become so connected that they will dedicate their lives to the mission of conservation, stewardship and restoration.

I thank and bless the many who joined on this journey to help make this legacy come into reality.

Hi everyone. My name Candy Ho. I have led this development as CEO since 2019, and have been involved with this sacred land since 2004. This is my first time posting personally, and I am compelled to speak directly to make my humble plea, because we have come to a critical time. The Cape is a spiritually powerful and environmentally significant place. This land has been in my daily prayers for years, and especially since I have become deeply connected to it after taking on responsibility for its stewardship.

I ask that if you support conservation and the conversion of private land into a park, where people come to learn to love and cherish the gifts of Mother Earth, please write to decision makers at Metro Vancouver.

This week, on April 19th and April 21st, there are fateful decisions being made by the Metro Board.

Recently, CBC released an article indicating that the park may be derailed due to opposition to camping. This is a real possibility.

I passionately believe that whether there is camping, or no camping, or less camping, this sacred, rare and diverse ecosystem deserves to be protected.

Lying on the earth is powerful communing, yes. But if there is to be no camping or less than 100 sites, people could connect with nature and develop a very deep relationship with her by coming for stewardship and restoration programs. Nature education groups from schools and communities across the region can participate in tending the land.

Last week on April 11, Bowen Council gave unanimous approval to โ€œdraft bylaws to amend the Official Community Plan and the land use bylaw, to permit Metro Vancouverโ€™s proposal for a regional park at Cape Roger Curtis, with overnight use of up to 100 campsites.โ€ This is Bowen Islandโ€™s show of good faith and good intentions, so that the process may continue without compressed timelines.

While it makes me hopeful, there are indications that this still may not be enough for Metro Vancouverโ€™s Board Directors to continue with the acquisition of this land.

Everyone today, and forever into the future, will be grateful for this park. If there was no camping at Pacific Spirit Regional Park, or at Capilano Regional Park, would anyone feel that they would prefer that the parks didnโ€™t exist? Has anyone ever looked back and regretted choosing park over development?

Please write to the region's elected officials if you feel that whether or not there is camping, they shouldn't walk away from this historic, paradigm shifting, legacy making opportunity.

Imagine being a kid and growing up on Bowen Island, in that environment, as part of a tight-knit community that shares the common goal of acting as stewards of the land.
