Paul Calderone

Laetitia Steyn came into my life when I was about seven or eight years old. She had just arrived in Canada and began teaching at O’Briens Dance Center in Ajax, where I was training. Around that time, she created a piece about the Itsy Bitsy Spider and his experience of arriving in a new place. It was the first time I had ever performed a role like that.

With Laetitia’s guidance, I had so much fun dancing it and learned an incredible amount. What I didn’t know then was how deeply that story would resonate with my own life later on. Years afterward, I would leave Canada myself to move to Germany and join a ballet company — stepping into the scary, wonderful, and disorienting experience of being a foreigner in a new place.

In a way, the story of the Itsy Bitsy Spider that she created feels like a projection of what was to come in my own journey.

Thank you,Laetitia
