Pillbugs look like garden lint with legs, but they are tiny land crustaceans doing underground sanitation work.

The real detail is stranger than their little armored curl.

They breathe with gill-like structures, which is why they haunt damp soil, rotten leaves, and the cool underside of stones like unpaid basement inspectors.

As they feed on decaying plant matter, some pillbugs can accumulate metals such as lead, cadmium, copper, and zinc inside their bodies, locking away pollution that would otherwise keep moving through the soil.

That does not make them magical cleanup machines. It makes them quiet indicators of what the ground has been carrying.

No bite. No sting. No disease-spreading villain arc.

Just a small gray recycler turning dead leaves into better dirt while carrying more environmental baggage than it deserves.

Tiny armor, gentle purpose, and a job nobody notices until the soil gets healthier.

Slow down for snakes and turtles.....

Today is World Turtle Day. 🐢 Turtles are out crossing roads from now through early July, laying eggs in the gravel shoulders of every cottage country highway. Pull over. Help them across.
Cindy wrote a piece about how to do it . We made a tee.
