You just got the keys. 🗝️
Before you unpack a single box, save this post and do these 10 things.
1️⃣ Rekey the exterior locks
You don’t know who still has a copy - Make sure you know exactly who has access.
2️⃣ Find your water shutoff & gas valve
Find them before something goes wrong. You don’t want to be searching while water is pouring out of a broken pipe.
3️⃣ Check every smoke & CO alarm
Test them, replace batteries where needed, and check their age. Make sure they meet current Ontario requirements.
4️⃣ Label your breaker panel
Flip each breaker, see what it controls, and label it. You’ll be glad you did when something trips at 10 PM.
5️⃣ Change your furnace filter
You don’t know when it was last changed. Replace it and write down the filter size for next time.
6️⃣ Create a home systems age tracker
Take a photo of each label and keep everything in one place. You’ll know what’s getting older and what you’ll need to budget for.
7️⃣ Reset every code & login
Garage door, smart locks, alarm, thermostat, cameras, Wi-Fi. Remove previous users and connected devices.
8️⃣ Film the house before you move in
Walk through every room and document the condition. Save the photos/video somewhere safe.
9️⃣ Set up your utilities
Make sure electricity, gas, internet and water are properly set up in your name. Don’t assume everything happens automatically after closing.
🔟 Update your address
In Ontario, you have 6 days to update your driver’s licence and vehicle permit. Update your health card, insurance and other important accounts too.
