Have you ever experienced a major hurricane ⛈️?

I experienced my very first hurricane in 1988 while still living in Jamaica. The unforgettable hurricane Gilbert.

When news came that there was going to be a hurricane many prayed it would not make landfall but the uninitiated like myself wanted to experience a real hurricane. Excitement mingled with a bit of trepidation as we awaited it's arrival.

The hurricane passed in three phases:
🌧️1st Phase
Rain pelted and wind blew hurling everything in its path (that was not firmly secured), out of the away. The sound of portions of the roof lifting and the sight of huge tress breaking under the strain of the wind sent fear into us. (careful what you wish for)

😌2nd phase
After hours of pelting, something strange happened, the rains held, the wind seized and there was an eerie calm. This phase is when the eye of the storm passed over the island.
During this period the authorities warned us to stay inside, to stay safe as the storm was not over. A few brave souls ventured out doing all they could to secure their homes. You could hear them hammering away racing against the clock to make some quick repairs before the next phase of the storm arrived.

⛈️3rd Phase
Wind and rain returned with even greater intensity, evoking even greater fear and causing even more damage.

💡💡💡💡💡

The current real estate 🏘️🏘️ climate reminds me of phase 2, the passing of the eye of the storm.
Presently, there is an unusual quiet in what is characteristically a busy spring market period. Fewer that normal number of buyers have ventured out and “secured” (bought) homes, many others have opted instead to “shelter in place” waiting for the storm (economic uncertainty) to pass.

How long this quiet will last is anybody’s guess.
We do know there is pent-up demand for housing so buyers will eventually return.

My advice to buyers is not to wait until everybody else decides to jump back in the market, because that renewed demand may just tip the scales in the sellers’ favour.

If you have any thoughts on when buyer confidence will return, let me know below.

Ps. The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1

“Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home” are words from a song (by Henry Bishop) that my dad would often quote especially if he was returning home after he had been travelling for a while.
Ours was a small home but one that was always filled with love, laughter and kindness not just to each other but to friends and neighbours as well.

Having a place to call your own, no matter the size, brings with it a sense of stability and security that is extremely satisfying. It is a space that belongs to you, where you can retreat from the outside world and truly be yourself. Even the simplest home offers comfort, a place to rest, and the assurance that you always have somewhere to return to at the end of the day.

Beyond just shelter, a home fosters a sense of belonging and pride. Having a space to decorate, organize, and make memories in is invaluable. It becomes a reflection of who you are, a personal sanctuary where you can build your life, nurture relationships, and create lasting traditions.

If you are looking to purchase a home of your own, focus more on what you can afford rather than how large or small the house is. Bear in mind that a home’s value is not about its size, but in what it represents; independence, achievement and the comfort of knowing you have a place in the world.
