Premier Doug Ford has announced that Ontario, in collaboration with the federal government, plans to temporarily expand the HST rebate on new homes—offering up to $130,000 in relief for buyers.
The proposed one-year program will run from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, and apply to homes priced up to $1.5 million, with reduced rebates available for higher-priced properties.
Previously limited to first-time buyers, the expanded rebate is designed to stimulate housing construction and improve accessibility for a broader range of purchasers.
The initiative could potentially lead to the development of 8,000 new homes and create approximately 21,000 jobs. However, the plan is still subject to federal approval.
Ford emphasized that the objective is to revive stalled housing projects and make homeownership more attainable, while also calling on municipalities to reduce development charges to further support growth.
