On June 24th, my son Harlan and I had the honor of presenting the second annual Kelsey Bell RE/MAX Valleyview Realty Student Sport Award to Neelin graduate Alyssa Newitt! This $300.00 scholarship is awarded to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence in both academics and sports, and has made a positive impact in their community. Special consideration would also be given to an individual who has been impacted by hearing loss- either directly or through a close family contact.

"For my entire life, my dad has just been “my dad”. He is never known as the “guy with the hearing aids”, or “the one who cannot hear”. Since the day he brought me home from the hospital, my dad has been rocking the hearing-aid look. He has experienced hearing loss since his early twenties. The routine of waking up in near-silence has been his norm for more than half of his life.

Having a dad with hearing loss not only makes life interesting but also makes me realize how much we take for granted in our ability to listen. Taking an extra moment to slow down, enunciate words, and speak clearly can make all the difference. This has enabled me to have strong communication skills. During times of misunderstandings I have learned patience and resilience to not only empathize with my dad, but also to communicate clearly. Over time, I’ve come to realize that I shouldn’t turn my back to him when I’m speaking and that I need to reduce background noise, or else he won’t pick it up!

I’ll always love my dad for who he is, not for what tries to define him. He has always been there for me. Watching my softball and ringette games and listening to my piano performances. He has always been present in my accomplishments, and I will be forever grateful.

I will always be there to listen for him when he cannot."
