FIRST TIME HOME BUYERS WILL TAKE THE BULLET!


Seems to me that first time home buyers take the hit while the government agencies and politicians talk about affordable home ownership. To be realistic, it is first time buyers that have the minimum down-payments and they are saddled with costly insurance premiums. First time buyers are typically young as well as in the early stages of their careers. CMHC recently added a further barrier for first time buyers requiring all buyers to qualify for the current posted 5 year rate which is higher. The insured mortgage offered by Genworth and CMHC is not a life insurance benefiting the buyer but rather an insurance to guarantee the lender repayment on a defaulted loan. Land transfer taxes could also be designed to give a one time break to the first time home buyer.

Genworth, the largest private mortgage insurer in Canada, has matched the CMHC's move earlier this week to hike the premiums it charges homeowners to insure their mortgages.
