Progress update on this exterior house paint

Did some temporary spot repairs on this hardie trim and restored these garage doors, repainted and repaired the dormers and everything’s got its first coat, one more coat and that’s a wrap.

A quick time-lapse of the prep behind this garage door restoration.

It’s a nice change of pace from my usual deck work, but the process is the same—a clean, durable finish always starts with careful preparation. Repairs, sanding and cleaning are what make the final result last.

A nice change of pace from my usual deck work—these garage doors had seen better days, but they’re already coming back to life.

After thorough prep, some much-needed repairs and a fresh first coat, the transformation is well underway. One more coat to go, along with Hardie siding spot repairs and fresh paint on the columns to complete this exterior refresh.

Whether it’s a deck, garage door or exterior woodwork, there’s nothing better than restoring what’s already there.

This client wanted skirting added along the bottom of the existing lattice panels to give the deck a cleaner, more finished appearance.

A simple addition that closes the gap, protects the bottom edge and ties everything together nicely 👌

The loose and deteriorated material was first cleaned out of the joints to create enough room for the new polymeric sand. Fresh sand was then carefully brushed in, packed down, topped up and thoroughly cleaned from the paver surfaces before being gradually activated with water.

Proper installation helps stabilize the pavers, limit w**d growth and prevent the joint material from washing away—a relatively small repair that leaves the patio looking cleaner and better protected.

Dundas deck wrap-up 👌

This was a challenging restoration completed last year on a deck that had been left untreated for roughly 16 years and was already nearing replacement.

While the restoration brought it back beautifully, years of exposure had weakened some of the wood fibres at the surface. Seasonal movement through the winter caused a few of those deteriorated fibres to lift and splinter, so I returned to smooth out the affected areas and refresh the finish across the deck.

The wood was still extremely dry and readily absorbed the maintenance coat—another reminder that heavily weathered wood doesn’t always respond like newer lumber. Every restoration is different, and severely neglected wood can occasionally benefit from additional attention as it settles through the seasons.

The deck is now looking consistent, well protected and ready for plenty more use. Restoring it was also a much more economical option than replacing all 1,000 square feet of decking.

I haven’t been posting as much lately, I’ve been burning the candle at both ends between working fulltime and keeping Oak & Ember projects moving behind the scenes.

This backyard rebuild is almost wrapped up! The new deck is down, complete with hidden fasteners, a clean border detail and custom framed lattice panels that create a much more private and functional outdoor space.

Rebuilding the adjoining raised garden bed wasn’t included in the original scope, so I’ll be scheduling a return visit to take care of that along with the last few finishing details.

Even before the final touches, this space has already come a long way and I’m really happy with how it’s taking shape.

I I’ve been a little quiet on here—the work hasn’t slowed down, but posting definitely has.

The framing on this custom-shaped deck is officially complete. I took some extra time to work through the angles and carry a clean border detail around the perimeter, and it was well worth it. Details like these take more planning, but they’re what make the finished build feel intentional.

Decking goes down next, and that’s when this transformation will really start coming together. 🔨

Deck framing is almost wrapped up 👌 Got the main layout squared, the angled section framed in, and everything is finally taking shape. Back at it today to finish locking it all together and fine-tune the level of a few deck blocks now that everything is held square—then it’s time for deck boards.

Fine-tuned the pergola, got all the deck blocks laid out, and the framing is coming together. Next up: level everything off and start laying deck boards 🔨
