Every boy growing up should have a Mr. Miyagi in their life, like in the karate kid. For me, that person was Phil MacIsaac.
Phil introduced me to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and helped shape not only my love for martial arts, but also who I became. He came with me to every martial arts academy, always calling just to check in, and whenever he learned a new technique, my phone would ring with the same message “Meet me at the gym right away, I have to show you something.”
If you knew Phil, you knew how deeply he loved martial arts. The gym was his happy place. He was always learning, always teaching, and always eager to share what he knew with anyone willing to learn. A true pioneer in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo world!
I’m incredibly grateful for everything you taught me, both on and off the mats. Thank you for your friendship, your mentorship, and for always believing in me. You made a lasting impact on my life that I will never forget.
Rest easy, Phil. You will be deeply missed.
