Initial clearing to make way for UniverCity development, 2003.

In the years since the first and most significant tree clearing, environmental activists, SFU students and faculty have all stood witness to the Trust’s commitment to balancing allowable development with the protection of the forest. The design first sketched by Jim Moodie and company and refined by Norm Hotson made way for “green fingers” of forest that are integrated into the community, providing buffer zones and park-like pockets.

Once past the obvious and inevitable first step, clearing land and laying infrastructure in the ground, the Trust faced a strategic question: What do you build first? The answer was both inevitable and impossible: Everything.

In celebration of the 15th anniversary of the first residents moving into the UniverCity community, there will be a number of events taking place this week (Sept 9th - 13th). Info: http://univercity.ca/culture-e…/community-programs-events-2/

Stop by the Town Square tomorrow from 10am - 12pm to help us decorate the 15th Anniversary banner and check out some of the great things the SFU Childcare Society are doing!

Burnaby Mountain Community Concept Plan, Hotson Bakker Architect’s Team, 2000.

In 2000 the SFU Community Trust invited four teams to propose master plans for the Burnaby Mountain community. The winning plan, one that fit elegantly with the City of Burnaby’s first Official Community Plan (OCP) imagings, was cast by the firm Hotson Bakker Architects (now Dialog Vancouver). A defining characteristic of the community, and one that has come to distinguish UniverCity amongst some of the most exemplary green communities in the world, was “that the new community should be as sustainable as it could possibly be.”

Here's an aerial image of Burnaby Mountain back in 2000. Parking lots and forest that would become UniverCity.

In 1963, when architects Arthur Erickson and Geoff Massey submitted their initial plan for SFU, they envisioned that it would anchor a residential community atop Burnaby Mountain. In 1995, SFU President John Stubbs and City of Burnaby Mayor William Copeland signed a Memorandum of Understanding to begin the development process. Early negotiations resulted in the transfer of more than 320 hectares of University-owned land to the City to be included in the larger Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area. In return, the City granted SFU development approval to begin planning a community, later named “UniverCity”. In 1996, the City of Burnaby approved the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Zoning Bylaw Amendments for the development, setting the project in motion.
