Today, we recognize the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples and honour this year's theme: Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being.

Indigenous midwives play a vital role in preserving knowledge, culture, and community wellness across generations.

At YWCA Calgary, we acknowledge that reconciliation is an ongoing journey. We remain committed to listening, learning, and taking meaningful action alongside Indigenous communities.

Human trafficking is a global crisis that continues to evolve.

This year's theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam," shines a light on a growing form of trafficking where organized criminal networks exploit individuals through coercion, fraud and forced participation in large-scale online scams.

Trafficking can affect anyone, but women and girls remain disproportionately impacted due to systemic inequalities that increase vulnerability. Many survivors experience significant physical and mental health harm, including trauma, anxiety, depression and violence.

At YWCA Calgary, we know that human trafficking and gender-based violence are deeply connected through patterns of power, control, and exploitation. Ending trafficking requires more than awareness. It requires prevention, survivor-centred support, stronger protections and a collective commitment to addressing the root causes of violence and inequality.

Today, we stand with survivors and join communities around the world in raising awareness and advocating for change.
