Today marks a significant milestone in my journey - 7 years of continuous sobriety from drugs and alcohol. As I reflect on this journey, I realize I could have never done this alone. My heart is filled with gratitude for every soul that has been a part of my path. To those who loved me when loving myself seemed impossible, your support has been my anchor. I am eternally thankful to everyone who played a role in these years, whether by offering kindness or imparting lessons that shaped my spirit.
I share so much of my life and journey not for accolades but as a testament to the preciousness of life. By God's grace, I stand here today, a survivor in a narrative where many dear to me have not been as fortunate. Their absence is a loss that can never be filled, and I hold onto the memories we made and the love that always remains in my heart, both of which propel me forward. To my family, loved ones, every friend and the community who has stood by me through thick and thin and those who stand tall beside me now, your strength has been my guide.
In our journey, we walk on the shoulders of the giants that paved this path, drawing inspiration from the giants in our lives and our ancestors before us. In the Sikh tradition, 'Seva'—selfless service—is a cornerstone, mirroring the service that forms the foundation of recovery. This parallel teaches us the beauty of giving back, of contributing to a cycle of kindness that uplifts us all. In this spirit, I strive to make my predecessors proud, honouring their legacy through continuous service to all those around me.
Most of all, my deepest thanks go to God, for it is through God’s grace that I navigate this life, a life that once seemed destined for a premature end. Every day is a gift, an opportunity to remember those we've lost, to love those we're with, and to help those we've yet to meet. In my journey, I've encountered God in the most unexpected moments—manifesting in different buildings, spiritualities, teachings, meditations, prayers, and songs, showing through every person I encounter and in every detail of my surroundings.
As I celebrate this milestone, I am reminded that our journeys are not solitary. We are a tapestry of interactions, learning, and love. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has been a part of my story. Here's to many more years of recovery, service, and gratitude. Together with each of you, those who are with us in spirit and those yet to come, I hope to continue to walk this path, making a difference one day, one act of kindness at a time.
