Today’s project: a multi-family unit.

Multi-family attics are their own kind of challenge. Low clearance, tight corners, trusses in all the wrong spots, and party walls to work around. Some days the job description should just say “advanced yoga required.”

You’re on your knees, then your back, then somehow sideways, dragging a hose through a space built for air — not for people. And the whole time you’re staying on the joists, because the ceiling below doesn’t forgive a wrong step.

It’s not glamorous. But every unit in that building ends up warmer in January and cooler in July because somebody was willing to contort themselves to get the coverage right.

That’s the job.

Changing bathroom fans. Installing baffles. Topping up attic insulation.

It’s all part of the same job: keeping Alberta homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Sorell Insulation | Why Baffles Matter
Small piece of the attic. Big job.
These are baffles — channels installed along the underside of the roof where it meets the soffits. Their job is simple: keep the airflow path open.
Your attic needs to breathe. Air comes in through the soffit vents, travels up along the roof deck, and exits near the peak. That flow keeps the attic dry, prevents moisture buildup, and helps stop ice dams from forming in winter.
The problem: blown-in insulation can drift into the soffits and choke off that airflow completely. Blocked soffits mean a sealed attic — and a sealed attic means trapped moisture, wet insulation, mould risk, and shingles cooking from underneath in the summer.
Baffles hold the channel open. Insulation goes deep, airflow stays clear, and both do their jobs without fighting each other.
Insulation without ventilation is only half the system. We install both, every time.
