On the first rainwater leader, the joint isn’t properly fitted inside the 90-degree elbow-the fitting that redirects the pipe-which means water is escaping at the connection instead of continuing through the pipe.

The next one is exactly what you want to see-properly fitted, no leaking at the joint, and directing water where it’s supposed to go.

There’s messy drywall mud… and then there’s this.

The finish is one thing, but when you take a closer look, the drywall itself wasn’t even put together properly.

And yes, this was a new build-and the builder said it was normal. There can be a lot happening during construction, and things get missed.

That’s exactly why it’s worth having someone go through the home before you take possession, even when everything is brand new.

There are two things wrong with this deck… Can you spot them?

Just because a vent has been covered doesn’t mean it’s actually gone.

In this home, the floor vents had been tiled over, making them look like they’d been removed. But the thermal camera told a different story.

Heat was still showing up beneath the tile, indicating the ductwork below was still allowing warm air into a space that had been sealed off.

That means some of the heat you’re paying for may be going underneath your flooring instead of into your living space. Properly removing or sealing unused ductwork can help prevent wasted energy and unnecessary heating costs.

Sometimes registers simply get missed during renovations. The good news? In a case like this, the heat is already there, so it can be an easy fix to cut out the area and add the register back in.

Another reason a home inspection can pay off.

This deck had a bit more bounce than it should.

One of the boards was moving underfoot, and another had already broken, exposing rot inside.

Deck boards can deteriorate from moisture over time, and sometimes you don’t realize how far it’s gone until the wood starts to soften or break.

Just another reason to pay attention to what’s under your feet during a home inspection.
