π NATIONAL SON & DAUGHTER DAY π
National Son and Daughter Day is intended as a simple reminder for parents to appreciate their children, whether they're 5, 25, or 55. There isn't a definitive founder of the modern August 11 observance but it does appear to have grown its roots in the 1930's or 40's.
The nicest thing about this day is that it doesn't need to become another commercial occasion. The original spirit is much more about BEING PRESENT.
For younger children, that could mean putting the phones away and letting them choose a family activityβa bike ride, trip for ice cream, backyard barbecue, picnic or favourite meal.
For teenagers, it might simply mean spending some uninterrupted time together and asking about what's happening in their lives.
For adult sons and daughters, make the phone call. Invite them for coffee or dinner. Tell them you're proud of them. Share an old family photograph or memory.
And the original flower tradition from the 1930s could actually make a wonderful modern tradition: place one flower in a vase for each son or daughter in the family as a quiet symbol of gratitude.
