Real question: Would you work for six months on a bet? 🙋♀️
Spend your own money. Rearrange your family’s plans. Give someone your time, expertise and word.
Then walk away without a paycheque.
Would you do it again? And again. And again.
That’s the part of real estate the general public don’t see on a lawn sign (or on Instagram).
People often see the commission. They rarely see the hours that never become one.
The hardest part isn’t only losing the income.
It’s knowing how much of yourself you gave to something that may never happen ~ and how rarely that effort is acknowledged.
A top-tier agent can care deeply, do the work, answer every call and have difficult conversations, yet still have no control over the outcome.
Then tomorrow, they show up with the same energy for someone else.
There’s a particular loneliness in staying calm while your own livelihood is uncertain… it’s a skill we become all too familiar with as seasoned agents ~ helping everyone else feel secure while quietly carrying all the risk yourself.
“We don’t really have to sell.”
Clients are allowed to feel that way. Truly.
But please tell us before we build six months of work around a goal you’re still deciding on. Your uncertainty deserves room. Our time and heartfelt effort deserve consideration.
No one has to feel sorry for us. We chose this work. We take big risks, and the rewards can be big. We also have big bills, failures, and limits.
Loving our profession doesn’t make us immune to the realities of what this business asks of us 24/7. And speaking honestly about that shouldn’t make us less professional.
Yes, some agents put up a sign and disappear. Some don’t know how to negotiate. Many will agree with anything to get your listing.
Please recognize that honest, hardworking agents deserve better. You deserve better, too.
If yours keeps showing up, communicating and caring enough to tell you what you need to hear, please see the human doing that work.
Mental health in real estate deserves more than a punchline about our commission cheque.
Loyalty and trust are a two-way street ~and the real currency. 🤍
