For many Canadians, the Victoria Day long weekend signals the unofficial start to cottage season. However, this year, recreational real estate is attracting a demographic of buyers looking beyond the traditional vacation property.

Royal LePage forecasts the median price of a single-family recreational home in Canada will rise four per cent this year to $604,552, following a 4.3 per cent increase in 2025 to $581,300. The brokerage expects prices to increase despite the broader economic uncertainty.

Why buy early?: Some parents are purchasing homes for their children long before adulthood to lock in current prices and hedge against worsening affordability.

A growing number of parents are purchasing property for children still in elementary or middle school, aiming to secure housing before prices climb further. In one Australian case, parents spent over $500,000 on a two-bedroom apartment for a child under 12, a move echoed by U.S. families facing simi...

Richer colours, layered textures, vintage pieces, and comfortable layouts are showing up everywhere right now, especially in spaces people actually use every day. It’s less ...

Former "Today" show host Kathie Lee Gifford has put her enormous Connecticut estate on the market for the staggering price of $100 million—32 years after she purchased the expansive abode with her late husband, Frank Gifford.

The TV personality—who left "Today" in 2019—also built an in-home recording studio where she was able to pursue her music career from the comfort of her own house, which is known as Cedar Cliff and is listed with Leslie McElwreath of Sotheby’s International Realty.

In recent years, zellige tile—handcrafted clay tiles traditionally made in Morocco—have also entered the chat, and their subtle irregularities lend pretty texture to a kitchen.

A backsplash can set the tone for the entire kitchen, especially if you’re looking to tile an accent area, a whole wall, or even the entire room.

The “best place to buy” really depends on your life, your budget, and how each local market is moving right now.

This look at Canada’s 2026 housing market points to places like Edmonton, Ottawa, St. John’s, and Fredericton as markets where buyers may find more value than in the country’s priciest cities. It’s not a one-size-fits-all list, though. Some areas are more affordable, some are heating up, and...
