It was Saturday, the weekend for so many, to do as they wish with their time off work. Not with rescue, there is never really time off unless we shut our phones and computers off, but then what if an animal is in great need of us?
Thatās what happened this weekend. Got a text saying this pup made his way limping to a shop. The people let him in, seeing he had a hurt back leg, wouldnāt put weight on it and it was extremely cold outside. With temperatures dropping. Miranda who found the pup, starts looking for help. Texting people she hoped could help. She only had a few hours until closing up until Monday. One of our volunteers was contacted through another person. Saying this poor dog is hurt and needs help. By the time our volunteer got hold of Miranda it was 5 min to closing and she didnāt know what to do with him, not everyone can just take in a dog. It was going to -26 plus a wind chill that night. Our volunteer quickly put food on the table for her family, extended family that came for a visit, left them to pick up the pup. They understood. An animal needed help.Another of those weekends...
The pup was afraid and tired when she got him.A hurt leg, but not broken, and he is starting to put weight on it. A vet visit could wait wait until Monday. Did she really have room for one more dog at her home? Not really, she already had 3 fosters and her own dogs. But how can you leave a hurt pup or dog, look in his eyes, and walk away ? Well she couldnāt. This is what rescue is about. Sacrifice. One has to make things work.Sunday comes and the pup isnāt wanting to eat and is sleeping all the time. We soon realize there is something wrong. Parvo ? Always on our minds. A 40 min drive one way to the vet has to happen. And the weather isnāt great but it has to be done. Itās confirmed: He has Parvo. He is being treated and we hope for a full recovery. He need fluids every 6 hrs by IV. The foster home takes him home has to bleach and clean all areas the dog has been, wash all bedding, towels and dog beds he may have lie on, and monitor his recovery for the next few days. She now has to cancel plans with family, friends and even work to care for him and make sure no one come over until the house is bleached and we hope to not spread it. So much for a peaceful weekend with family. Does she grudgingly do this? Not at all. She couldnāt imagine him out in the cold with parvo, he would have died. She is glad she got him.
Please send your best wishes, the pup needs them....
Please do not breed more dogs.Have all spayed, neutered. Abandoning a pup is bad, abandoning a very sick puppy is inexcusable.
Rescues needs more fosters. More people to sacrifice their time, give their love, open their home for the many out there. Please help however you can.
