Just as it makes sense to have a pool in Florida, there are certain things that just make sense when residing in the Alberta prairies. The wide open spaces of the area are beautiful with picturesque sunrises, while offering a stark juxtaposition to life high up in the mountains. But having Banff, Sunshine Village, Lake Louise, Canmore and Panorama Resort right in our back yard offers the best of both worlds.
For instance, a garage is critical. The last thing you want to do after a storm is clean off your car before you can go somewhere. A 4x4 vehicle is also fairly important in the winter months, throw it into 4 Low on steep terrain and you'll get where you need to go. A mud room off the garage will really help to keep the rest of the house clean. Make sure your washer and dryer are located here and include smart storage for boots and all the layers needed to survive winter.
An extra freezer in the garage and ample pantry storage are crucial when preparing for a blizzard and a tankless water heater means endless hot water. In the event of an ice storm, a generator is great, should you lose power, because in most cases, when you lose power, the heat goes too.
Bonus points for a heated driveway, talk about luxury!
What are the things that just make sense for you living in Calgary?
