🌧️ What to Watch For After the Rain 🌧️

Rain is great for lawns and gardens—but it can also bring a few hidden hazards to your yard.

After a rainy spell, take a walk around your property and check for:

💧 Pooling Water
Standing water can damage your lawn, attract mosquitoes, and signal drainage issues.

🏠 Overflowing Gutters
Water spilling over the sides instead of flowing through downspouts may mean it’s time for a gutter cleaning.

🌱 Lawn Stress & Disease
Excess moisture can encourage fungal growth and lawn diseases that leave grass yellow, patchy, or thinning.

🍄 Mushrooms & Fungi
Warm, wet conditions can cause mushrooms to appear almost overnight. While many are harmless, some species can be toxic if ingested by children or pets. If you notice mushrooms popping up in your yard:
✔️ Remove them promptly
✔️ Supervise children and pets outdoors
✔️ Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet has eaten one

With the warm weather ramping up next week we will be offering some select services until things are dry enough to perform our spring clean up services (power raking, aerating etc)

We will be offering:
-Small to medium tree and hedge trimming. Now is a great time for most trees as they’re still dormant. Let’s get them trimmed up before they bud!

-Black knot removal. If you see this pesky fungus in your trees, now is the best time to be rid of it!

-Planter Building, big and small. Message me for pricing based off size and design.

- On warmer days we’ll be offering window washing.

- Gutter cleaning. If you want to get a jump on spring downpours, once roofs are clear and everything is thawed, we will be offering eavestrough cleaning.

It’s that time of year when all us ladies want to do is go to the pumpkin patch 🎃, the uPick Apple orchard 🍎 (do we even have one of those nearby?), the corn maze 🧑‍🌾, and take family photos 📸 at Fish Creek Park. It’s also that time of year when the leaves start piling up, and so does the “honey do” list.

I’m not one to tell you what you should do, but I bet the Mrs would sure like it if you took her to do one of those things and let us take care of those leaves that are piling up in your gutters….psst have you tried wearing your hat backwards at the pumpkin patch? 😉

We've been seeing from a number of our neighbours social media posts that basements are beginning to draw some of this rain water. If you notice water in your basement, here are some helpful things you can do to prevent toxic mold while you wait for a professional or for the rain to stop.

Heavy rains can lead to groundwater seeping into your basement — but don’t panic! Here are a few quick steps to manage it:

1️⃣ Safety First — Avoid standing water near electrical outlets. Shut the power off to the basement if it's safe to get to the box.
2️⃣ Find the Source — Check walls, floors, and window wells.
3️⃣ Remove Water Promptly — Use a wet/dry vacuum, sump pump, or call a pro.
4️⃣ Dry & Dehumidify — Prevent mold by drying thoroughly with fans and a dehumidifier.
5️⃣ Check Outside — Ensure gutters are clear, downspouts direct water away, and grading slopes away from your home.

Mid-summer and still raining? 🌧️🌿
Your lawn and garden might look green and happy — but here’s what to watch for after weeks of wet weather:

✅ Soil Saturation – Roots need air too. Check for water pooling or soggy spots that could lead to rot or disease.
✅ Mower Timing – Avoid mowing wet grass! It tears the blades and compacts the soil underneath.
✅ Fungus Watch – Warm, wet weather is the perfect storm for lawn fungus. Spot brown patches early? We can help.
✅ Trim It Back – Plants love the rain but may be growing wild! Pruning now reduces disease and keeps them thriving.

Heavy rain in the forecast? Here’s how to protect your garden — and avoid a soggy mess. 🌿☔

✔️ Clear Gutters & Downspouts
Make sure water is flowing away from beds and foundations, not pooling near them.

✔️ Loosen Soil in Beds
Compacted soil = surface runoff. A quick fork-through helps water soak in more evenly.

✔️ Add Mulch
2–3” of mulch cushions the impact of rain, keeps roots from washing out, and locks in nutrients.

✔️ Stake Tall Plants
Rain + wind = flopped flowers. Support anything top-heavy before the storm hits.

✔️ Check Drainage Paths
Make sure garden edges or low spots aren’t holding standing water. Minor grading now can prevent major headaches later.

💧 Bonus Tip: Avoid working wet soil immediately after rain — it compacts easily and stresses roots. Let it breathe!
