This story is heartbreaking, but it also reminds us of something I tell my clients all the time: never invest in a property just because it looks like a great deal.
I've seen people get excited by glossy brochures, high rental return promises, or "limited-time opportunities" without doing proper due diligence. By the time they realize something isn't right, it's often too late.
Whether you're buying in Canada or overseas, always verify the developer, confirm title ownership, have a local real estate lawyer review the documents, and never rush because someone says, "You'll miss out if you don't act today."
A good investment should still make sense after you've asked the hard questions. If it only works when you stop asking questions, walk away.
Sometimes, the smartest investment decision is the one you choose not to make.
