This was such a special day in Calgary.

Twenty years ago today, 51 of our community’s sickest children made an extraordinary journey across Calgary.

Ambulance after ambulance carried them from the hospital on Richmond Road to their new home at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Television and radio stations asked Calgarians to stay off the roads — and people did. The whole city seemed to understand that precious cargo was on the move.

Inside the new hospital, every detail had been planned. Every child had an individual care plan. Then, nearly two hours ahead of schedule, an announcement came over the speakers: “The last patient has arrived safely.” Three simple words followed: “Good work, everyone.”

That day marked the beginning of a new era in child health. Today, we celebrate the staff, physicians and teams who made that remarkable move possible; the families who placed their trust in them; and the community whose advocacy, fundraising and generosity helped build a world-class hospital for kids.

Twenty years later, the building remains extraordinary. But it is the people inside — and the community behind them — who have made it what it is today.

A new recreation option is opening just outside Ward 2! ⚽️

Rocky Ridge Athletic Park will open for bookings on September 24, featuring two new artificial-turf fields, lighting, parking, washrooms and spectator seating.

While the park is located just beyond Ward 2’s boundaries, it will be an important nearby resource for many local families, athletes, community groups and sports organizations. The additional field space will help create more opportunities to play, train and compete in northwest Calgary.

Initial fall booking hours will run through October 29, with full-field bookings available on Thursdays and Saturdays.
