After years of caring for homes while our clients are away, we have encountered just about every situation you can imagine. That experience has taught us which questions to ask before you leave, including the little things that are very easy to overlook.

We're sharing this recent post that we saw on Facebook as a reminder to everyone - the questions before you go are always for a reason. In the case of this Facebook post, she was able to gain access to her parents home. But, she did get a hefty locksmith bill in the process.

Our team asks about access, alarm systems, pets, water shut-offs, emergency contacts, service providers and the quirks of your home that only you might know.

Because the best time to discover that one tiny detail matters is before you are hundreds or thousands of kilometres away.

September is almost over, which means Canadian Home Watch Month is drawing to a close.

But your home does not stop needing attention when September ends.

Over the past month, we have talked a lot about what it means to leave a home unoccupied and why having someone you trust keeping an eye on things matters.

It is not just about having someone stop by.

Does your insurance policy have requirements while you are away? Is your home prepared for changing weather? Who will be checking on it? How will you know what is happening at home while you are gone? And if something does go wrong, who is there to notice it and help you determine what happens next?

These are questions worth asking whether you are leaving for a few weeks, heading south for the winter, or simply spend a lot of time away from home.
