Making its way back into the spotlight is the debate over blanket rezoning in Calgary.

A multi-day public hearing began this week to consider whether to repeal the controversial bylaw, which took effect in August 2024. There has been massive public interest in this proposed repeal, with 339 speaker requests, 69 panel requests, and nearly 2,300 written submissions in support of or in opposition to the repeal.

The original motion for passing the bylaw was to allow for more dense housing options across the city, and has since garnered praise for addressing the cityโ€™s housing shortage, but has also been critiqued for the impacts it has had on traffic, infrastructure, and community character.

City officials have warned that repealing the policy could affect housing supply and risk federal funding agreements.

The hearing is expected to last several days.
