With Thanksgiving weekend here, I’ve been thinking about how much I have to be thankful for.

I’m thankful for Alberta. I’m thankful for the opportunities this province has given me, and especially for the generations of people who came before us and helped build the Alberta we enjoy today.

I’m a fifth-generation Albertan. In 1903, my great-grandfather and his brother, John and Lloyd Stonehocker, moved from Dakota to land near Vegreville purchased in 1902. They farmed and raised cattle. The colourized photo below shows them hunting moose.

I’m proud of that history. But none of us built Alberta alone.

So what actually made Alberta great?

We hear about “real Albertans,” “Alberta values,” and the “good old days.” But have we forgotten what made those days worth remembering?

It wasn’t everyone sharing the same religion, background, or politics. It was opportunity: to work hard, help neighbours, raise a family, start a business, and build a better life.

Indigenous peoples lived here long before Alberta became a province. Newcomers from across Canada and the world brought skills, cultures, and dreams, helping build our communities.

Our history wasn’t perfect. Not everyone was treated equally. We should learn from our past, not repeat its mistakes.

There’s nothing wrong with faith, tradition, or pride in your heritage. But wearing a cross doesn’t give someone ownership of morality. Waving a flag doesn’t make someone more loyal than their neighbour.

Hard work. Honesty. Fairness. Compassion. Opportunity. Looking out for your neighbours.

If we’re going to bring back the good old days, shouldn’t we start with the best of those values?

Because Alberta wasn’t built by one kind of person, and its future doesn’t belong to one kind of person either.

This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for the generations who worked, sacrificed, welcomed, and built something bigger than themselves.

We inherited the benefits of their hard work.

The greatest way we can honour them isn’t simply to celebrate what they built. It’s to make sure we’re still building an Alberta future generations will be thankful to inherit.

Happy Thanksgiving, Alberta. 🍁

Dolly Parton built the program as a tribute to her father, a tenant farmer who couldn't read. She said that before he died in 2000, he told her the Imagination Library was probably the most important thing she'd ever done.

It started in 1995 in her home county in Tennessee, mailing books to about 1,700 kids. The model never changed: one hardcover picture book a month, addressed to the child by name, from birth to age 5, at no cost to the family. A kid enrolled from birth ends up with a personal library of around 60 books.

By the mid-2020s it had spread to five countries, and roughly 1 in 7 American children under 5 were getting a book in the mail every month. More than 3.5 million books go out every month, and the cumulative total passed 325 million this year. Parton often said fostering a love of reading was the achievement she was proudest of, ranking it above her music.

Parton died Tuesday in Nashville at 80. She's survived by six of her siblings.

I grew up in Parkland and Park96 has always been such an amazing community space. Now my friend Jason is using it to host his incredible reptile camps during the teacher’s strike.

If you’ve ever met Jason, you know he’s amazing with kids — they absolutely love him and his camps are always a hit. Each day is filled with hands-on animal encounters, outdoor play, and fun learning activities.

The best part? It’s only $50 per day, and you don’t have to commit to a full week — you can just book the days you need. Camps start October 14th at Park96.

Here’s the link for registration: https://www.ticketor.com/yycnaturecentre/

If you know families needing childcare during the strike, please share this with them. Jason is a fantastic option and the kids will have a blast!

Calgary Reptile Parties is offering single day camps at Park96 during the Teacher's Strike, starting Tuesday October 14th.

Similar to our summer camps, each day will feature different animals and activities as well as playtime outside and indoors, different learning opportunities, and hands on photos with animals.

Registration for the first week is now available at https://www.ticketor.com/yycnaturecentre/ Registration for the following weeks will open the Monday before each week through the duration of the strike.

Camp is $50 per day and runs 8:30 - 4pm daily. Each day is separate - book for the days you need!

Space is limited! Purchase your registration today!
