#2016 was a year to remember. It was the most scariest time we faced in our nearly 15 years together.

This was the year we had lost one household income, the beginning of a new business full time, and the year Zak was born.

I use to use this story when I met clients, especially those starting out. I didn’t wish this experience on any one.

In 2016, I lost my job at Suncor. Shazeen was about to start her maternity leave as we welcome Zak into the world, and I didn’t qualify for EI because I had the “potential to earn” according to the CRA due to my real estate licence.

Two oil and gas incomes now became one maternity EI income and a commission income in an industry where 87% of agents fail in the first three years.

We also purchased our new home where we took possession this year, where we had put a significant down payment.

It was hard. We contemplated leaving our deposit at one point.

But we have a belief in our home, and in our culture, having kids at home, brings good fortune and prosperity.

So we worked through it. Saving where we could. We worked hard to get our family business off the ground.

We took it one day at a time.

10 years later, we are here and we have a beautiful family that we are able to support comfortably. 2016 is a year etched in our minds. The lessons we learned are ones we will never forget.

Don’t let the phrase “Buyer’s Market” lull you into thinking this market is going to be easier for buyers. The market only benefits the PREPARED buyer. The market in Calgary has sharply changed and if you have set roots up here and are still renting, this market is primed for you to take advance, but only if you have everything in line to take on the financial burden a home entails.

My career started in 2015 with the oil price dropped and we had our downturn. I was also in the business when 2020 when things had closed down completely. Have an experienced agent navigate these waters with you is critical to help you achieve your goals.
