Since 1995, the Foundation has invested over $170,000 in REALTORS® Association of Edmonton (RAE), supporting professional development, board training, and RAECON, Edmonton's industry conference. Melanie Boles, associate broker and past chair calls the result of AREF's investment a ripple effect: stronger agents, better-served communities, and a more professional industry.

Funding from the Alberta Real Estate Foundation supports the training and development of REALTORS®. When REALTORS® are better trained, they serve their communities better, and that raises the bar for the whole profession.

"When REALTORS® are equipped and more connected, our clients and our communities benefit from this," says Melanie, past chair of the REALTORS® Association of Edmonton. "We see a lot of personal growth in our REALTORS®, which transcends into how we better serve our communities."

Since 1995, AREF has invested over $170,000 into RAE. That funding has supported RAECON (Edmonton's industry conference), board training, director education, and professional development.

"Having that money come into our board of directors so that we can grow and develop as a board allows us to better serve our membership, which again allows us to develop and grow Alberta real estate."

When you need to know your rights as a tenant, your responsibilities as a condo owner, or what to look for when buying a home, where do you go? For over half a million Albertans on average every year, the answer is landlordandtenant.org or condolawalberta.ca. Both are free. Both are written in plain language. And both exist because of the Alberta Real Estate Foundation's funding to CPLEA (Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta).

Judy Feng, a staff lawyer and project manager at CPLEA, has led these projects for years. She says, “The resources aren't just used by people in real estate.” Legal clinics, community services, immigrant-serving agencies, landlord associations, and public agencies across Alberta all rely on them. "It just really shows the impact that AREF funding has had in making these ideas into a reality."

Judy Feng is a staff lawyer and project manager at the Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta (CPLEA), the organization behind landlordandtenant.org and condolawalberta.ca.

Since 2000, AREF has funded CPLEA's housing law and condo law education projects. Today, those projects include more than 200 resources, and they reach over half a million Albertans on average every year. Landlords, tenants, condo buyers, condo board members, and homeowners across the province are finding plain-language answers to real legal questions in these two resources.

Since 1992, the Alberta Real Estate Foundation and the University of Alberta have worked side by side, connecting academic research to real-world applications that benefit communities across the province.

Carolina Martinez Sanchez,Corporate Relations at the University of Alberta, points to AREF's contribution to the Stan Melton Chair in Real Estate at the Alberta School of Business as one example. "This is not only about a single project," she says. "It's about building a long-term centre of excellence that advances education, research, and leadership in real estate and city building."

Through this partnership, research reaches municipalities, developers, and the real estate industry. It shapes policy and practices. And it moves beyond theory into real impact for Alberta's communities.

Carolina Martinez Sanchez, Corporate Relations at the University of Alberta, says the Alberta Real Estate Foundation's partnership with the university is helping shift the conversation toward "more holistic views of real estate. One that values public space, land, social connectedness, and quality of life."

Since 1992, AREF and the U of A have worked together to put research directly into the hands of municipalities, developers, and the communities that can actually use it.

AREF's support has helped turn "a promising idea into real practice, into a province-wide initiative with real impact."

Lisa Baroldi, who led BOMA Edmonton and North as President and CEO, asked a thoughtful question about commercial real estate in Alberta: Where are the Indigenous people in this industry? With AREF funding, BOMA partnered with Oteenow Employment and Training Society and Tribal Chiefs Employment and Training Services Association on a first-in-Canada program for commercial real estate. Indigenous-designed and Indigenous-led, the project placed Indigenous interns in property management and operations roles, and it has had a 75% employment success rate. Three are now fully employed and advancing. Lisa calls AREF "the fourth partner," not just a funder.
